Book Report of the Wizard of Oz Recently I have read the book the Wizard of Oz which is written by the American writer, L.Frank Baum. The book I read is a simplified one that is rewritten by Rosemary Border. It is originally published by Oxford University Press in 2000.The book tells a story of a little girl called Dorothy who is blown by a cyclone to a country called Oz and finally returns home. Dorothy lives in Kansas, USA, with no witches or wizards but cyclones. And one day Dorothy is blown by a cyclone with her house to a completely unknown country called Oz. There are four witches and a famous wizard, the Wizard of Oz, who lives in the Emerald City. Dorothy’s house just falls on the Witch of the East who is a bad witch and kills her. The Witch of the North tells Dorothy that the Wizard of Oz maybe can help her, so Dorothy makes her way to the Emerald City to meet him. On her way to the Emerald City, she finds three companions, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion. With the help of her companions, Dorothy overcomes all the problems on her way home. Finally they all achieve what they want and Dorothy returns home with the help of the red shoes she has gotten from the Witch of the East. In the book, the Wizard of Oz is just an ordinary man without any magic. In fact, all they want is what they have already had through their own efforts, but they do not realize it. First is the Scarecrow who wants some brains because there is only straw in his head. After his journey with Dorothy, he gains a lot of knowledge and becomes more and more intelligent. When they meet difficulties, he can always come up with some good ideas. So at last, he has gotten brains even if there is still straw in his head for brains. This tells us that one can only get brains by one’s own experiences but not by other’s giving. Knowledge comes from life and practice. Second is the Tin Man who wants a heart because he cannot love or feel without heart. At first, he has no feelings, but then he has established a good friendship with Dorothy. When Dorothy is leaving them for home, he cannot help bursting into tears. At that time, he has already gained the emotion of human beings even without a real heart. In my opinion, to love and to feel depend on one’s sympathy to the world and that is what the heart really means. When one has a kind heart, he will be able to feel everything in the world with his emotion and his heart will be as pure as crystal. The last one is the Cowardly Lion. He is so timid that he wants to be brave. In the end, the Wizard of Oz offers him a bottle of water with BE BRAVE on it. He drinks it and believes himself to be brave. But what he drinks is just a bottle of ordinary water without magic. He himself is actually brave. Life is difficult for every one, but not every one will show his bravery to face it. Then when you have the bravery to confront it, you are brave. That is what we should do. The leading role in this book, Dorothy, is the symbol of all wonderful things. She is intelligent, kind-hearted, brave and persistent. On her way to the Emerald city, she comes across lots of problems; however she never loses heart and confronts them bravely. To the people of Oz, she shows her kindness and helps them kill the bad witches. There are many good qualities in her that deserve us to learn. In our daily life, when we meet difficulties, we should not give up our dreams without any efforts and should be persistent. In this way, even if we fail at last, we will not feel regretful for we have already tried our best to purse them. In this book, a few words have deeply impressed me: East, west, home’s best! This makes me think of my own situation. I have been living in school since junior high school. Since then, I spend very a little time at home. Although I think I have been used to the life in the school, I still regard my own home as the best because my own home can give me a sense of belonging. I believe that wherever I will be in the future, home will be the best in my heart forever. To conclude, the book is well worth reading, especially when you are tired of the social reality. The book can provide you with a world which is full of wonderful things. It can help you to relax and have a much better mood. |
