Ladies and Gentlemen:
Today, I will say something about this topic “study and work”. You know, it’s really a big theme that contains many things can talk about. But now, I will discuss a related social phenomenon and show you my views. Let’s answer this question: Why do undergraduates prefer to study in university (or college) rather than work after high school?
As we all know in past, a person is easy to find a good job only if he or she graduated. But now, it’s not true. Many graduates find no job or a job that it’s not related to their majors in university. However, there are so many people still choose to go to university instead to work after high school. It’s a strange phenomenon, isn’t it? And maybe we can find many reasons to explain it. But this time, I want to show you only two words which can account for it. I call them two “Pre-ce”s.
Firs one is “prejudice”. From child to adult, parents, teachers and the society always told us that going to university can help us to find a good job, so we believe it and study hard all the time in teens for getting a great grade in college entrance examination and then going to a famous university. Gradually, the prejudice is formed, and it make us convinced that working after high school means that this person is not smart enough to continue studying. So we treat it as a shameful thing and try our best to avoid it.
Another one is “preference”. In some sense, human is the laziest animal in the world. Because we invent many things to decrease physical work, such as cars for getting free from walking and many machines and tools for saving our energy. Besides, we value science and do more and more brain works now, like academic research and economic analysis. it’s reasonable to consider that people have preference to brain work. So people go to university for getting the necessary knowledge that brain works need.
It is worth to point out that “Pre-ce”s, prejudice and preference, are intensely steady and uneasy to change. And even if we all know clearly that graduating isn’t equal to finding ideal jobs now, we will still choose going to university instead of working. In short, those two “Pre-ce”s can be used to answer the question indeed and in part.
Thank you for your listening! That’s all.
