grand gathering “大会”，指的是盛大的会议，也可称之为“盛会”。这种会议通常比较隆重，规模大，内容重要，有纪念意义。

convention 一般侧重指某一政党或团体为某一特殊目的而召开的会议，也可指学术团体的年会；
They were arranging the entertainment at the company’s annual dealer convention.
他们正在安排公司商人年会上的娱乐活动。
conference 指的是通常持续几天的大型会议、研讨会；
There will be a governors’ conference in October.
在十月份要开个州长会议。
assembly 指的是集会，通常有许多人参加，是计划好的、为某一特殊目的而召集的会议。
The principal spoke at the assembly in the auditorium this morning.
今天上午校长在大礼堂的集会上讲了话。
council（委员会；议会）强调推举出来的一部分担任顾问或咨询者的人聚集在一起的会议。例如：
The school council will make are commendation to the principal about the traffic problem.
校委会就交通问题将向校长提出建议。
congress（大会）指社会团体或国家代表参加的正式会议，目的是交流信息或交换意见。例如：
The first national congress of the communist party of china was held on july 1, 1921.
中国共产党第一次全国代表大会是在1921年7月1日召开的。
